Cats and your furniture

cat_scratching.jpg

I have always wanted one of those modern leather couches. The only problem I have with Modern Furniture is the fact that our cat might scratch the leather up or poke a few holes in it.

We have always had a cat scratching post but that has never stopped the cat from picking a spot on an upholstered piece of furniture to apply her claws to. When we catch her in the act she quickly runs from the scene. It is when we go to sleep that she does her dirty work. Thankfully she has only picked one spot on an older easy chair.

Years ago we had a cat that picked out not the upholstered furniture to claw up but only unfinished wood. That cat became an outdoor cat after we found the damage. We have never had much luck in retraining a cat not to claw on the furniture once they have started the habit.
