animals,
blog stuff
As a blog owner and writer I often get some very strange comments and requests. Most are the usual “love the blog and please visit my website” and when I click on their link it does not take me to anything remotely related to animals or pets. Needless to say those comments are not approved at all. Then I get the requests for product recommendations. They want to know where to buy cheap hamster cages or what is the best fly spray for their horse. Unless I know the answer from my own experience I cannot give a recommendation.
Of course I do get my fair share of people who want me to write about their pet or animal products. I got a request a few days ago to write about bridgeport stoneware feeders and aquarium nails kits, neither of them do I know anything about and of course they are not willing to send me those products to test. They want me to write about them by just visiting their website and write glowing reports about them…………..I think not. I have done blog posts on dog food that was supplied by the dog food maker but it was limited to a few sample bags not a real test of their dog food. A real test would be a months supply of the stuff and see how my dog’s body reacted to the food over a month.
As long as I continue to write, I am sure that I will continue to get some strange requests.

I saw my fair share of doggy Halloween costumes in Walmart this year but a great lack of seeing any body dressing up in general much less their dogs. Halloween in past years was a sign that the economy was doing well. I do know that our local TV news station, last night, was reporting that an average of $76 per person was being spent on Halloween this year by the American public. I think that the reporter said “but I don’t know anyone that spent that kind of money on Halloween,” at the same time I thought it.
Of course this morning I hear on the news that Halloween sales have been very poor this year. I wish those TV news stations would get it right for a change. Just at the beginning of the week they did a report on Cavalia the horse presentation event. It is very much like the traveling Lipizzaner horses that put on shows across the nation. So what does the local reporter keep calling Cavalia? A circus!!!! WTF!
That same TV news station did a report last summer about the growing trend of birthday parties for pets. They reported the trend from sending out birthday invitations to serving minced meats in the form of cakes with a large dose of sarcasm. All I ask for is that, that TV station get some competent, animal knowledgeable reporters on the job.
So if I don’t get the time to write a Halloween post this year - Happy Halloween 2011

When this housing crisis first began a few years ago, I kept hearing horror stories of pets being left in foreclosed homes and found either dead or close to death by realtors weeks later. Pets have taken the brunt of this bad economy.
People who lost their jobs and then their homes have no resources left for their pets that they acquired years before and expected to keep them for the pet’s entire lifespan. Most pets rescues turned them away because they were overcrowded. Then some of the rescues had to shut their doors forever due to lack of donations. Rental homes and apartments would not allow pets or if they did they added a sizable cleaning fee to the deposit that someone who just lost about everything could not afford. So abandonment seemed like the only way to handle their pet situation.
Amidst all of this, I hear on tonight’s nightly news that there is a boom in spending on dogs. Where in the creation are these people getting their information from? Certainly not from those who are in charge of animal control in this country. Although I do see ads for Cape Cod rentals pet friendly that for $1500 a week you can take your dog with you but first add at least $300 in fees. Those places are not aimed toward the middle class income families but the more wealthy among us.
There seems to such extremes with this economy right now and our pets are the victims of it.
