In this day of prepackaged pet foods it is often hard to imagine what many animals actually eat. Take for example the parrot, what do they eat? Is it fruit, nuts, or do they hunt in the wild?
A parrots diet will be highly based on where does the parrot live if it were in the wild. The larger parrots that live in the canopy of the jungle will eat more fresh fruits and vegetables than the smaller parrots who live nearer the ground. The ground dwelling parrots will eat more seeds than those that live higher up in the trees.
So, armed with that information, you will need to find out more about your parrot’s native habitat.
The next time you treat yourself to a gourmet gift basket with fruit, remember that your parrot can join you with your tasty snack. They also enjoy fresh vegetables and broccoli is a favorite.

I am not talking about spoiling your pet, I am sure we are all guilty of that at one time or another, I am referring to treating your pet like a human child with expectations of that pet acting very much like a human. One of the most common “tricks” that some owners like to do is teach their dog or cat to “speak.”
“I love you,” is the most common phrase that is captured on video and put on YouTube and AFV, that dogs whine out. Dogs are not alone, cats can utter sounds that to us could be a phrase or word.
Speaking is just one step towards the pet being treated like a human child, some pet owners even go as far as acquiring a small primate and dressing it up, buying personalized baby gifts for their “child” and even throwing elaborate birthday parties.
The problem with all of this is that pets will not react as human children do. Pets will react as their instincts tell them to. To treat an animal with the same expectations as we expect of a human child would be a disservice to that animal.
So why do people treat animals like children? There are a few explanations. One would be that they want a substitute for the human child they never had or to replace a human child they had lost. Another explanation would be to copy something they have seen on TV or to copy how someone they know treats their pet. The last explanation would be that the trend is slowly becoming more acceptable to our society. I remember when dressing up your dog was limited to the 5 year old child having fun, not the current trend of buying elaborate costumes for special occasions and then taking out your pet to show it off.
Whatever the reasons, people need to keep in mind that their pet might react in a way that they did not expect it to when being treated like a child.

Have you seen that TV show on Animal Planet that is called Fatal Attractions? It is about people that keep very dangerous pets and often get killed by them. I have not seen the show yet. From the advertisements I have seen about the show, they cover the big cats and other large animals. Let me tell you that domestic livestock can also be deadly, not because of their personality but by their shear size.
Let’s face facts here people, no pet is “safe” to own. Even your pet cat can scratch you and cause an infection. Your pet horse can accidentally step on your foot and break it. A safe pet is almost an oxymoron like jumbo shrimp or safe diet pills. What the show should have been titled is “exotic pet owners and their deadly outcomes.” The problem with the show is that exotic pet owners are probably more aware of their pets habits and dangerous nature than most people who own a “safe” pet. The show plays up the rare case of the pet owner getting killed by their pet. It is more like a freak show type of TV show.
I might watch it just to see if the show is just sensationalism or ? We’ll see.
