Ferrets as pets

Posted by: Jan S  :  Category: exotic pets

My daughter is as avid an animal lover as I am. While I was fascinated with domestic pets and livestock she admired the more exotic types of pets like snakes, turtles, ferrets and mink. For much of her young life she has grown up in our rural homes so even though she could have those types of pets, she didn’t, but has a dog, cat and bird. She had for the longest time wanted a ferret. At the time that she first wanted one we lived in a state where keeping one was illegal. We have since moved to another state where having a ferret as a pet is not only legal but almost common place.

Ferrets here are treated like any other caged pet like rabbits or hamsters. They do go one step further here with pet stores selling cages, hammocks (for sleeping), and even dress-up clothing for ferrets.

Ferrets are not cheap, they are in the $200 and up range. They are also very active and get into everything if they are not supervised when they are out of their cages. You can fully expect one to be swing from your chandeliers if you are not watching them.

They must be handled from birth and taught not to bite, the same way rats and hamsters are handled.

Given the fact that we can now have a ferret as a pet, would my daughter be interested? No she has moved on to other interests now.
