The video above has got to be one of the most amazing riding videos I had seen in some time. As you watch it, look at how relaxed the western rider is when he rides the dressage horse. The dressage rider on the other hand looks more tense riding the western horse and even tries to plow rein the horse for the spins rather than neck rein. I applaud both riders for their showmanship and the video brought tears of shear joy to my eyes.

I am always on the look out for unusual books with lots of photos and I have found one about historic horse facilities. This book is called simply “Stables” and features 25 notable stables across the USA. Done in the style of a coffee table book that has lots of photos this book looks to be one that is good for browsing through during the wet season when riding is limited.
The front cover looks intriguing and the publishers statement of listing both historical and state of the art stables has me interested. They mention fountains and spa like landscaping for the Arabian horse barn in California. The book also goes into detail with the restoration of a stable on the east coast that originally housed draft horses and now is the home to polo ponies and retired race horses. Published just a few months ago, in April 2010, this book should be up to date on their information. The best part about it is that the book is now on sale. It was listed at $55 and now it is 35% of of that price. I wonder if it has something to do with everyone wanting digital books now? I don’t know but low tech books are great since they don’t need power to run them, just good lighting and somewhere comfortable. I can imagine explaining to my grandchildren one day what a bound book was.

In the bygone era of BI (AKA Before the Internet), most of our knowledge of nature and animals came from textbooks, TV and newspaper news, books written by specialists in their field and documentaries shown on TV or at the movies. If you went to your local library it would be a crap shoot if you got up to date information on the subject you were trying to research. At that time we were unaware of the information that was outdated.
Just a few months ago I wrote on this blog about how I had to do a research project on the ancient history of the horse and found out that the horse originated on the North American continent and not in Asia as was the old information that many people were taught. In fact prior to the 1970’s most horse books stated the erroneous fact of horses originally coming from Asia or the middle East. I have one of those books in my back room. In fact the discovery of the horse developing in North America was in the 1920’s and then further evidence was found in the 1950’s. Apparently that knowledge was not widely known, until the internet came along.
Instead of waiting until a book is published with new scientific evidence, the information is now released via the internet. The information is fast and detailed. Scientists now collaborate in real time over vast remote areas. Our understanding of nature and its history are now greatly improved.
