Have you been out on the trails lately? Are you hiking with your dog, riding your horse or just going out for a bike ride? Do you know proper trail etiquette? Knowing what to do out on trails is not only common courtesy but a huge safety factor too. If you ride your horse or your bike you are well aware of the sometimes conflict going on between horseback riders and bicyclists out on trail…it is not a good one.
In order to educate both horseback riders and bikers, 2 organizations have started an education campaign. The Idaho Backcountry Horsemen Ass’n and the Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bike Ass’n (CCCMB) have jointly issued this poster:

The Bay Area Equestrian Horse Network, known as BAEN, has just introduced a fantastic selection of free online how-to horse videos called The Horse Lover’s 2 minute How to Videos. They are short, entertaining and informative. I highly suggest you check them out.

There is a general rule among horse owners that you do not ask someone if you can ride their horse. It is considered rude. A horse is a very personal pet. A loved pet is not let out for others to ride. If you are non-horse owner and you wish to ride a friend’s horse then you must simply wait until the owner offers to let you ride - NEVER ask!
As a horse owner I have been asked a few times, but not many and when I was asked I simply ignored it. Usually those people got the hint and never asked again. If they want to ride a horse then they can go to a commercial trail riding outfit or take a riding lesson.
