As an animal lover I am aware of the many animal rescues, therapy organizations and other non-profits that beg for donations. There is one therapy non-profit that seems to always be on a horse message board that I frequent. The Director of the place is Kari Ann Owen. She is either looking for horses or trying to find retirement homes for the horses that they have used up. At least that is the way it seems. She also has shown, in her posts on the message board that she is trying to get involved in her “students” jumping the horses but has no training in jumping nor knowledge in choosing the right horses for the work.
Since she frequently posts the name and web URL of her non-profit I thought I would finally check her out. Her website is at www.freewildhorse.com and is called “Wildhorse.” On that page she gives herself the title of Dr. Kari Ann Owen, Ph.D, which sounds good on paper. But what is she a doctor in? Yes I found that out too, and it is not on the Wildhorse website. I Googled her name and found lots and lots of stuff. First she is a doctor of religion. Her personal website is at www.kariannowen.com and she shares a lot, maybe too much. Her writings on her abusive sexual encounters with her father and her journey into the bondage culture was a bit more than I wanted to know about her.
Yes I know that people do like to use titles added to their names just to promote things. I also know that I don’t like it when people use it to mislead others. Throwing that Ph.D on that horse therapy page makes it sound like she is highly qualified to run an organization like that. What she should do is add on that page what the Ph.D was earned in. It would make her sound more honest to those whom she is begging donations from.
Like I mentioned before, I Googled her name and found out she is a prolific writer with a passion about writing about her life and the mess it was in. Reading her writings made me question if this older woman (she is in her late 60’s to early 70’s) has it all together upstairs. She has some rather odd perceptions of life and not many of them are main stream. I found this rather odd piece that she wrote about her conversion from a Jew to Islam while blaming society for her fathers behavior. Then there is the short film she has made. She pleads with Bush and future presidents not to nuke Iran. I guess she doesn’t care about other countries getting nuked.
Yes I found out too much about a woman that begs for money, donations and help with horses online.

When I told my wife that I thought we should get our daughter some horseback riding lessons for her birthday as a surprise, she disagreed with my, to put it mildly. She just really hated the thought of our daughter riding horses. For some reason my wife thinks that horses are really dangerous, no matter how many times I’ve told her that these horses at these riding places are trained to be really calm and are used to working with kids.
Well, I went online to see if I could find some more information so that it would help me convince my wife that horse riding lessons are safe. While I was looking, I happened across this site sat! ellitestarinternet.com and after I read through it a little bit, I decided to switch over our home internet service to this provider.
I did find a website for a riding lessons service that talks a whole lot about the safety of the lessons and how they train them to work with children. I showed it to my wife and that made her feel a little better. I think I can convince her by our daughter’s birthday.

When I got my first horse over 20 years ago, I was at a boarding stable. It was mostly adult women who were “getting into” horses for the first time in their lives. Most of them had no clue as to what to expect from horse ownership or horses in general. I was lucky enough to have a dad that was a former jockey, so I had some experience with horses prior to me getting involved with horses. I boarded my horse at the stable for 7 years and during that time I saw plenty of people that should have never gotten involved with horses.
Those that should have never owned a horse were people who were easily intimidated by their own horse. They were unaware that horses have a hierarchy system in their minds when it comes to other horses and people. Some of the other people, mostly women, would listen to everyone’s advice about health or training problems and follow the wrong advice. They would also never take riding lessons or have a horse trainer. They learned from books or videos.
One woman, who I was quite fond of, was only a horse owner for less than a year. She bought a buckskin gelding named “Buck” and seemed to know what she was doing. I liked Buck, he was a short stout horse, with a mellow mind, great for a beginner. She had him for less than a month and changed his name to Sferra. Somehow the name Sierra did not fit him. To me Sierra was a female sounding name. As the months passed, she took Sierra on trail rides and rode around the boarding stable grounds. One day she asked me to take a look at Sierra. She thought his gait was “off.” She was right, he was paddling. Since he had not done it before, I told her it was that he needed a good trim and to switch horse shoers (her farrier was terrible). She did not mind my advice but had one of the worse horse vets in the area look at her horse. The verdict was that the horse had navicular and the vet wanted the woman to have the horse put down. Thankfully she did not heed the vets advice either and looked for a pasture home for the horse, she found one. She said goodbye to Sierra and left horse ownership for good. I thought that was the end of the story, it wasn’t. Several months later I was at a team penning. I was riding my horse and my hubby was riding his. I then spotted a horse that looked like Sierra. I rode over to the the horse and owner and asked the owner if the horse was the Sierra that was owned by the woman I knew. The answer was yes, it was Sierra but now they call him Buck…….and he was no longer lame. Sure enough, they saw the same thing I saw, a bad shoer had made poor Buck lame. They got Buck and used the same shoer I had for my horse. Buck was now back to being that great beginners horse, except this time he had a knowledgeable owner who had years of horse experience.
