Crocodile Power!

Watched some Animal Planet last night after finishing my homework. I didn’t know it would be on that late (it was 1 am) but apparently satellite tv has some benefits. They were showing an episode on the life of a crocodile, and it was pretty great. Did you know that the sex of a crocodile is determine by the temperature of the egg during incubation? Apparently the eggs between 85 and 95 degrees fahrenheit become males, and the ones outside of this middle range become females.

Anyways, Happy Chinese New Year to everyone! This year is the year of the rabbit, and next year will be my year! My parents gave me a ring today to wish me good luck in my exams, and sent me some great food too. I was eating some moon cake while watching the crocodiles on Animal Planet, and that was a pretty good combo. I had trouble falling asleep afterwards though due to the sugar rush, which is probably why I’m writing this post.

Tomorrow there’s going to be a series on predators of Africa. I’ll probably be able to watch that too, but lab work is getting more and more time intensive and I’ll probably just opt to sleep a bit longer instead of watching the great tv service I got after checking out these www.directstartv.com.

Wildlife that is illegal and legal to own in Oregon

Posted by: Jan S  :  Category: raising animals, wildlife

Oregon is one of the most lenient states when it comes to owning and breeding non-native wildlife. It should be no surprise that they have an extensive list of what animals they will allow to be owned and what is considered illegal.

For example the mongoose is illegal and the ferret is legal. In fact many wildlife species are considered as domesticated animals in Oregon. There is a 25 page document that lists all of the animals that are illegal and legal to own in Oregon. The link is below.

Dolphins as therapy animals

Posted by: Jan S  :  Category: Animal sites, animals, news, wildlife

I was amazed to see a video on TV a few weeks back showing children in water, being held by adults and dolphins swimming around them. This was a therapy session with dolphins. It should not surprise me since dogs and horses have long been used as therapy animals.

If you would like to see dolphin therapy for yourself then here is one of my personalized invitations and go and check out Island Dolphin Care at islanddolphincare.org

They have videos that are on YouTube for you to watch and be amazed.
